How to Recover a Crypto Wallet

How to recover a crypto wallet after losing your phone, password or seed phrase: what is genuinely recoverable, and the scams that target this moment.

Whether a crypto wallet can be recovered depends entirely on what you still have. If you hold the seed phrase, you can restore the wallet in any compatible app. If you use social recovery, your guardians can restore access. If you have neither and the wallet was self-custodial, the funds are permanently unreachable.

Work out which situation you’re in

The word “lost” covers several very different problems. Find yours before doing anything.

You lost the device, but have your seed phrase

Recoverable. Your funds were never on the phone; they’re on the blockchain, and the phone held the key. Install a compatible wallet on a new device, choose “import” or “restore”, and enter the phrase. Everything reappears.

Do this on a device you trust, and type the phrase directly into the wallet app never into a browser, a notes app, or anything that arrived in a message.

You lost the device, and use social recovery

Recoverable. Install the wallet on a new device and start a recovery. Your guardians are notified and approve. After the built-in time delay, control transfers to the new device.

Contact your guardians directly, by voice or in person, so they can verify it’s genuinely you before approving.

You forgot a password or PIN, but have the seed phrase

Recoverable. A wallet password usually encrypts the local key store; it isn’t the key itself. Reinstall and restore from the seed phrase, then set a new password.

It was a custodial account (an exchange)

Recoverable through the provider. If a company held your keys, they can reset your access through their normal identity-verification process. Use the official app or website reached by typing the address yourself, not by clicking a link, and follow the account recovery flow.

Self-custodial, no seed phrase, no social recovery

Not recoverable. This is the hard case, and honesty serves you better than hope: there is no technical route back. The funds are visible on-chain and permanently immobile. No service can change this. Every business claiming otherwise is a fraud.

The only things genuinely worth trying:

  • Search thoroughly for the backup. Old notebooks, safes, documents folder, a photo you took and forgot, an encrypted note, a password manager entry.
  • Old devices. A phone or laptop where the wallet was installed may still contain the key store. Don’t wipe anything.
  • Partial phrase. If you have most of the words but not all, or the words but not the order, legitimate open-source tools exist that can search the remaining space. Only run these offline, on a device you control, using well-known open-source software, never a website.

What to do if your wallet is compromised

Different problem, opposite urgency. If you believe someone else has your key, you entered your phrase on a suspicious site, or you see transactions you didn’t make:

  1. Move the funds now. Create a new wallet with a freshly generated key on a device you’re confident is clean, and transfer everything. Do this before investigating anything.
  2. Assume the whole wallet is compromised. Every address derived from that seed phrase is exposed, not just the one that was drained.
  3. Don’t reuse the phrase. Ever, for anything.
  4. Check the device. If malware is the likely route, don’t create the new wallet on the same machine.

Speed beats tidiness here. An attacker with your key can act at any moment.

How to make your wallet recoverable next time

Whatever happened, the fix is structural rather than a resolution to be more careful.

If you’re using a seed phrase: store it offline in at least two physically separate locations. Metal backup plates survive what paper doesn’t. Never photograph it, never store it in cloud notes, never type it into anything except a wallet app you opened yourself. And make sure someone you trust can find it if you die, ideally through a sealed instruction with a solicitor rather than by telling them the words.

Better: use a wallet that doesn’t depend on one secret. Social recovery removes the single point of failure entirely, losing any one thing becomes survivable, which is how every other system you depend on already works.

Frequently asked questions

Can I recover a crypto wallet without a seed phrase?

Only if the wallet supports another recovery route. Social recovery wallets restore access through guardians, and custodial accounts can be reset by the provider through normal identity verification. For a traditional self-custodial wallet with no backup other than the seed phrase, there is no way to recover the funds.

Can a company recover my crypto for a fee?

Almost certainly not, and every service advertising this should be treated as a scam. If a wallet is genuinely self-custodial, no third party can regain access without your key material the cryptography does not permit it. The narrow legitimate exception is data-recovery specialists retrieving a damaged file or drive you still physically possess.

I lost my phone. Are my crypto funds gone?

No. Your funds are on the blockchain, not on the phone. The phone held the key that controls them. If you have your seed phrase or a working social recovery setup, you restore the wallet on a new device and the funds are there.

What should I do first if I think my wallet is compromised?

Move the funds immediately to a new wallet with a freshly generated key, using a device you are confident is clean. Speed matters more than tidiness, since an attacker with your key can act at any moment. Do not enter your seed phrase anywhere to check whether it still works, and do not accept help from anyone who contacts you.
